Danish architect and designer, internationally known for his vast contribution to architectural functionalism and his simple yet effective chair designs. His Series 7 chair is one of the finest examples of timeless design and has become the most sold chair in design history.
Made in 1955 this pressure moulded veneer chair was a development of his 1952 Ant Chair, originally designed to be three-legged. Initially, an architect, his interest in furniture design peaked in the 1950’s when he produced his most iconic pieces in collaboration with the design company Fritz Hansen.
The Egg Chair and Swan were used in his designs for the Royal Hotel in his hometown of Copenhagen. Jacobsen is known for his elegant sense of proportion and, in the words of R. Craig Miller, author of “Design 1935-1989, his work “is an important and original contribution both to modernism and to the specific place Denmark and the Scandinavian countries have in the modern movement.”
